THE FLORENCE ELLISON TRUST - Its formation and early years

On her death in the late 1970's Florence Ellison, who had been an active, worshipping member of New Life Church, Durrington, Worthing (then known as Durrington Free Church), left the majority of her estate to the Church, with the request that a work be set up to provide homes for elderly persons of low means. Her bequest consisted of a capital sum, together with the property which she had occupied with 2 friends (who had the right to remain in occupation during their lifetime). A Trust was formed to administer her request and became a registered Charity (no.280824) on the 30th September, 1980. The Trust Deed provides that the eldership of New Life Church be responsible for appointing the Trustees and the eldership itself has always been represented on the Trustee body.

The day-to-day running of the Trust's activities, which includes the maintenance of the various properties, is in the hands of the Trust's administrator (a voluntary post) and the Trust pays tribute to the previous Administrator, John Green, who occupied this position so competently for many years. The current administrator is Eric Kimber and Eric (whose photograph appears on our How to Contact Us page) is the first point of contact for our residents should they have a query.

The original capital sum that Florence Ellison bequeathed enabled the Trust to purchase its first property and, when possession of the house that was also bequeathed later became available to the Trust, other homes were then purchased out of the proceeds of the sale of that property. The Trust was then able to expand its work further and the portfolio of homes in its possession.

In order that pastoral care can be offered to our residents by the members of New Life Church (if needed and requested), it has always been the policy of the Trust to acquire properties within approximately a half mile radius of the Church in Salvington Road, Worthing. It is expected that this will continue to be the policy.

We pay tribute to the memory of Florence Ellison who, in her bequest, so generously expressed her gratitude for the financial provision in her own life. This has enabled the Trust to continue to help those whose housing needs might not otherwise have been met. Truly, her memory lives on
